BRING A LARGE POT TO A ROLLING BOIL

Grab a pot large enough to fit the amount of lobsters you have comfortably, they shouldnt be packed too tight. Use a steaming rack if available so that the lobsters cook more evenly. You’ll need to add around 2 inches of water to the pot and then bring it to a boil.

LOWER THE LOBSTER INTO THE POT

Grasp the lobster by the body and lower them one at a time into the pot. Cover with a lid and allow them to steam.

STEAM LOBSTERS 15 TO 20 MINUTES, DEPENDING ON SIZE

The length of time you steam the lobsters will depend on their size. In general it should take 15 to 20 minutes for a single 1 1/2 - pound lobster. Add 4 minutes for every additional 1/2 pound. The lobsters should be a bright red color when finished.
*Be careful with larger lobsters as they will turn bright red before they are finished cooking. These larger lobsters are important to test with a thermometer and not just go on color alone.*
If the meat is translucent that means that it is not cooked all the way through. It needs to be opaque through and through. If you cook it too long, the meat will get rubbery, so keep an eye on the time.

SIMPLE TIP!

The best way to tell if a lobster is finished cooking is by testing the temperature of the tail. It should read 145°F.
